Armadillo Removal

The only armadillo species that inhabit’s North America is the nine-banded armadillo. Non-native to the U.S., armadilloarmadillos began moving into Texas from Mexico around the 1880s, and are now found ranging as far north as the Carolinas. Due to an armadillo’s lack of body fat and slow metabolism, they are unable to survive in cold winter weather. Because of this, the possibility of armadillos shifting to the upper United States is unlikely.

Habitat Preferred

Primarily found in forests of tropical and temperate regions, armadillos prefer to live in wooded areas with soft soil, allowing them to forage for food easily. Although armadillos would rather live in areas away from the human population, they will often wander onto people’s properties in search of food, water, and shelter.

Damage Caused

Armadillos are common here in Texas and are found living on residential properties where they burrow underground, depositing the dirt back onto the homeowner’s lawn or landscape. As an armadillo searches for grubs, earthworms, and insects to eat, their long snout and strong claws leave tons of holes all over the yard.

This ugly damage done by the rooting and digging activities of armadillos is what classifies them as pests. Additionally, not only do armadillos leave a mess in your yard, they can create structural damage when digging underneath your porch, patio, driveway, sidewalks, and shed.

Trapping and Removal

For successful trapping and removal, it’s essential to properly plan and understand the behaviors of the animals you are trying to trap. You can’t place a trap anywhere in your yard and think the armadillo will wander in. You will also want to find all entry points critters are using to get onto your property or into your home. We never recommend handling armadillos without the proper knowledge and protection. Doing so can cause harm to you and the animal- so it’s best to leave the trapping and removal to a professional.
